The SF State men’s soccer team turned in a dominating performance statistically, but still managed to make things interesting in the 2-1 victory against lowly Cal State Stanislaus on Sunday.
The Gators kept the pressure on in the first half earning 13 shots to the Warriors one in a victory that could have easily been four to zero if not for some missed opportunities in front of the net.
That didn’t bother head coach Joe Hunter who was glad to see his team avoid a let down after Friday’s dramatic victory over No. 17 Chico State.
“We were clearly the more experienced team than them. I told the guys 'your going to have to take 10 (shots) at this level to get one (goal)’, so look at it. Twenty shots, two goals,” said Hunter.
What did bother Hunter was the defensive let down that kept the game close after a misplayed ball in the box allowed a Warrior player to sneak in and score their only goal of the game.
“Statistically I think we outplayed them, but I told them ‘you can’t have a letdown that gets them back in the game’. We’re learning as well and that’s good, but we have to be a little bit tighter, a little bit sharper back there,” said Hunter.
The Gators first goal came after Spencer Schwandt was able to control the ball on a cross by Sergio Villalva and kick it through traffic for his second goal of the season in the 30th minute.
The second goal didn’t come until the 69th minute when Dylan Glass headed a Robert Maeda cross into the back of the net to take the 2-0 lead and seemingly put the game out of reach.
Glass, last year’s leader with eight goals in only 14 games, got his first goal since he scored twice in the first game of the season.
“I’ve gotten a lot of chances and I just haven’t got one. I just tried to put it on frame and luckily it went in. It was just a relief man, believe me,” said Glass.
With eight minutes left the Gator defensive lapse allowed Stanislaus to cut the lead to one giving the Warriors hope to send the game into overtime.
The SF State defense stepped up with the help of a magnificent save by Israel Cisneros to hold the lead and earn the victory.
This weekend’s wins bring the Gators conference record to 2-4 snapping their four-game conference losing streak and putting them back in contention in the CCAA North Division.
Next up for SF State is a trip down south to visit conference foe Cal State San Bernardino this Friday at 3 p.m.
