The few spectators in attendance got a glimpse into the SF State women’s soccer future and a spectacle by the normal starters against the first year team the Academy of Arts.

The Gator’s (5-4-2 overall, 3-2-1 CCAA) win, 3-0, was prettier then the Sistine Chapel by Michelangelo.

Three regular starters were in the line-up to begin the non-conference game and the rest were a mix of regular subs and players that have not seen much action.

The starting team held their own against the Urban Knights (1-8-1) not allowing a goal and making a few promising offensive strikes. The game remained scoreless until the regular starters made their appearance.

“Everybody impressed us today,” head coach Jack Hyde said. “We wanted to give everyone a game to let them develop. Everybody played and impressed us.”

The Gator’s starters consisted mostly of freshmen and sophomores. The whole Urban Knight’s was freshmen and sophomores.

“We played well,” Prisca Carpenter said. “We needed to pick-up the communication. We needed to pick it up like the starters.”

Carpenter and Alex Emanuel headed up the offensive attack for the Gator starters. Carpenter had one shot on goal and Emanuel controlled the ball and made some great touch passes.

“I had to redeem myself and show the coach that I deserve a starting position,” Carpenter said.

In the 34th minute the regular starters came into the game and immediately carved up the Academy’s defense the way Michelangelo carved the David – perfectly.

Within a minute of entering the game Zoila Marquez had a shot on goal and within six minutes Robin Bowman had the first goal of the game and her fifth goal of the season.

Sara Whelan took the corner kick and was given the assist on Bowman’s header. It looked as if Whelan may have her first goal of the season on this play with the ball deflecting off the goalie.

Bowman said something hit her head, but she did not know if it was the ball or the keeper.

Myriah Johnson scored the second goal with the assist going to Lauren McAuley. McAuley nearly had her first goal of the season, but hit the crossbar.

Michelle Mason launched a ball from the sweeper position to forward Kara Cunnigham who wrangled it in and took it in for a break away goal.

The regulars had 15 shots and nine of them were on goal. The defense was like clay in their hands waiting to be molded.

The purple and gold hit the road this weekend for Southern California where they will play two conference games. Friday they will play against Cal State San Bernardino and Sunday against Cal Poly Pomona.
