The Gators performed the “So Cal Stomp” for the last time of the regular season in a 1-0 win over Cal State L.A. to complete the sweep of the South Division in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Sept. 12 vs. UC San Diego 2-1, Sept. 14 vs. CSU Dominguez Hills 2-0, Oct. 3 at CSU San Bernardino 1-0, Oct. 5 at Cal Poly Pomona 2-1, and Oct. 12 vs. Cal State L.A. 1-0.
“It’s a big feat for a Northern California team to beat all the Southern California schools,” head coach Jack Hyde said.
SF States’ only goal came in the first half from freshman Michelle Mason. Her first collegiate goal came out of a scrum with Lauren Candia and Courtney Hamchuk had touches before Myriah Johnson put the ball off the crossbar to Mason for the shot near the edge of the goal box.
Mason’s roommate, Carly Bliss, speculated on what Mason would have said if she did not have to leave right after the game: “It felt so good to finally get one after not starting for so long. I’m ecstatic.”
The purple and gold defense handled their business as usual picking up the team’s ninth shutout in 16 games. This was keeper Emily Hart’s XX shutout of the season.
The midfielders won the balls in the air and distributed to the flanks and the offense held the ball up front and put one in for the win Courtney Hamchuk said. SF State out-shot the Golden Eagles (4-7-2 overall, 3-
5-1 CCAA) 15-9.
“[The game] was nothing too exciting, nothing too fancy, but we got the win,” Morgan Davison said.
“We still haven’t played the way we know we can play.
Davison said she wanted to see more passes put at the feet of players to be able to make a move and more connection on passes.
Players worked the ball into the corners, but kept loosing them when they were passed back to the midfielders and there were crosses to the other team Hyde said.
“When we get a goal ahead we need to play smarter,” Hyde said. “We didn’t play the best game, but we ground out the win.”
Bliss receives the “Almost Award” for the game because she almost had her first goal of the season and second goal of the game three times. Bliss put herself in great position to score on headers and shots, but could not get it past the Golden Eagles’ keeper Heather Emswiler.
“I will get one. I want it to de dramatic, a header, and I want everyone to jump on me,” Bliss joked. “I would love any goal.”
This was not the prettiest win of the season, but it held them firmly atop the CCAA North Division with a record of 9-5-2 overall and 7-2-1 in conference.
“It’s nice that a win comes natural now, we have not been use to that,” Lauren McAulay said. “We go in confident and it’s not a surprise.
The women’s team has four conference games left. Two of those games will be next weekend on the road against Cal State Stanislaus and Chico State.
“We’re in a great position,” Hyde said. “We’ve done a great job of staying together to get in this position for the last four games.
