Hear that crash? It's SF State's baseball team coming down to Earth.

The Gators' pitching was pummeled by Sonoma State for 14 runs, while SF State's offense failed to get on the scoreboard in a 14-0 loss to the Seawolves Tuesday at Maloney Field.

SF State's starting pitcher Patrick Haugen, who only gave up one run in eight innings in his first start of the season, was lit up for eight runs in only four innings of work.

"I wasn't throwing as many strikes [as last game], which made me pitch from behind for most of the game," Haugen said. "They were able to get me out of rhythm."

The Gators' offense also struggled, and they were shut out for the first time this season.

SF State, who had nine hits, didn't have a problem getting on base. Their real trouble was trying to score those runners, where they stranded all nine of them.

"Left on bases were killer for us," head coach Tony Dress said. "[The team was] challenged today. We were able to see what still needs to get done for us to improve."

The Gators' best scoring chance came in the bottom of the first when they had the bases loaded with two outs, but catcher Matt Memeo struck out swinging to end the inning.

"We had our chances early, we just didn't execute," said second baseman Sean Proni, who was tied for the team lead for hits with two.

A total of four Sonoma State pitchers blanked SF State, with Seawolves' pitcher Taylor Lewis picking up the win after three innings of relief.

The Gators, who committed two errors defensively, seemed to lack intensity for much of the game.

"We didn't come in focused and didn't do a lot of the little things," Dress said. "You can't do that against a good team like they (Sonoma State) are. It was a real eye-opener for us."

Sonoma State broke the game open in the fourth inning where they exploded for 5 runs, giving them a commanding 8-0 lead that they never surrendered.

The loss dropped the Gators to 4-2 on the season.

SF State looks to bounce back when they take on Academy of Art University this weekend in a three game series at Maloney Field. The Gators defeated the Urban Knights 6-1 in their season opener.
