Going into Thursday's duel meet against Menlo College, SF State head wrestling coach Lars Jensen knew it was going to be a close tough match.
It was - and the Gators came out on top.
SF State's wrestling team squeaked by Menlo College pulling out a 16-15 victory Feb. 13 in their final home meet of the season.
"In all my time coaching, I haven't seen a duel meet like that," Jensen said. "The least amount of points either team can score [combined] is 30."
Several key factors led to the Gators' one-point victory. One was when Freshman Naveed Bagheri scored the only major decision by beating Aaron Garcia 11-3 in the 133-pound match.
"Overall, it was a team effort," Bagheri said. "Without one of those matches, we wouldn't have had it. We put in the work, and I would say that is the reason we won."
Another pivotal match came when junior Vincent Bordi got a takedown with one second left against Al Kinslow. Bordi won the 197-pound match by a 3-1 decision.
"I figured it all came down to me," said Bordi. "I waited for him to make a mistake, he made a mistake at the very end of the match, and I capitalized on it."
Senior Joaquin Carlos extended his winning streak to 4-0. Carlos beat Menlo's returning All-American Lee Morrison by a 6-1 deciscion in their 149-pound match.
"I didn't try to do anything too fancy," said Carlos. "Just solid wrestling."
Though the Gators benefited from a late minute takedown, junior Ben Lockett lost his 141-pound match to Christian Martinez by a 5-4 decision. Locckett was ahead by one point up until the last five seconds of the match when he shot unsuccessfully and was taken down.
Another Gator loss occurred when Lucas Duckwall dropped an 8-4 decision to Mike Cavanaugh.
"Duckwall had been pinned by that kid," said Jensen. "And I said 'don't get pinned.' He goes out there and [Duckwall] almost pins him. That was a good point in the match; we only gave up a three-point decision."
Senior Marques Gales and junior Steve Franklin won their individual matches and helped seal the win for the Gators.
Senior Curtis Schurkamp lost the final match of the meet by a 6-3 decision to Jose Hernandez in the 125-pound match.
"Of course, Curtis is slowly getting back," said Jensen of Schurkamp, who is currently coping with a knee injury. "He tied the score with about a minute to go. We tried for something, but it didn't happen."
SF State faces Division I Cal State Bakersfield on the road Feb. 15 for their final duel meet of the regular season.
"We're not going to go out without showing them that we're tough," said Bordi. "I'm not saying that we're going to kill or dominate them, but we'll definitely put up a fight."
