For a team ailing to secure a postseason berth, the SF State women's softball team found a perfect remedy: Academy of Art University.
Starting pitchers Ashley Jackson and Kendra Wood both tossed complete game shutouts for the Gators, propelling them over the Urban Knights in both games of the doubleheader 2-0 and 5-0.
"I just concentrated on changing up speeds and staying off of the plate," Wood said. "They're known as a free-swinging team... so I just used that to my advantage."
Wood was a jack-of-all-trades in the second game, silencing the Urban Knight's bats while also thumping a two-run homerun to right center in the bottom of the fourth. The blast put the Gators up 4-0, giving Wood breathing room and SF State a comfortable lead.
"I was just looking to get my job done and move her [pinch runner Lauren Candia] somehow and I got pretty lucky on an 0-2 pitch," said Woods. "She threw me a pretty nice one."
Head coach Cristina Byrne was impressed with her team's performance, especially the play of her starting pitchers.
"We definitely dominated in the circle. I can't say enough of what they did as pitchers," Byrne said. "They had full command all day and that's huge for us defensively."
The Gators were also solid defensively, committing no errors in either game, while also showing off their gloves with several diving catches.
"I think we looked sharp out there, very time a ball was hit there was an out made. That's going to be huge for us going forward," said second baseman Jessica Delgado.
In the first game, the Gators were locked in a pitching duel with the Urban Knights, but were able to put enough runs together to secure the victory and help Jackson get her second shutout of the season.
"Offensively we strung some hits together, and that's something we've been working on all season," Byrne said.
The Gators' next home game will be on March 27 against Humboldt State University. SF State is back in action this weekend at Cal State San Bernardino.
