The popularity of fantasy sports is at an all-time high. With the amount of fantasy team owners for the NFL alone numbering in the millions, more attention is being given to how many statistics a professional athlete can rack up, rather than the number of games they can help their team win.
But why let the professionals have all of the fantasy fun? If SF State had a fantasy league, here are the top five players you would want on your team for the 2009 fall sports season.
1. Beth Perkins, Senior, Volleyball, Outside Hitter
The top-ranked SF State fantasy player of the fall sports season is a killer on the court. Literally. Perkins leads the Gators in kills this season with 131, averaging 3.45 kills per game. The senior is also third on the team with 102 digs, averaging 2.7 per game, making her an all-around threat for the Gators. If her nickname isn't something cool like "The Serial Killer" or "The Executioner" by the end of the season, something's wrong.
2. Dylan Glass, Senior, Men's Soccer, Forward
Glass is the Gators' offensive star so far for the men's soccer team, with four goals scored and 12 points already in this young season. If he can continue this pace for the remainder of the season, he'd be a steal as the second pick of SF State's fantasy league. Glass has shown the kind of offensive firepower you need to catapult your fantasy team into first place.
3. Katie Voss, Freshman, Women's Soccer, Forward
Keeping with the offensive theme, Voss comes in as the third overall fantasy player. The freshman sensation out of Pleasanton, Calif. is the leading goal scorer for the women's soccer team with four already this season. Why isn't she ranked as high as Glass? Voss has only totaled 8 points overall, giving Glass a slight statistical advantage. Also, the women's team only averages 1.4 goals a game, while the men's team averages 2.4, making it easier for defenses to key in on Voss with a lack of other offensive potency around her. Still, Voss would make for a great pick in your draft.
4. Mike McNeill, Freshman, Men's Soccer, Goalkeeper
Don't worry, defense hasn't been totally ignored in these rankings. The Gators' goalkeeper has been doing his best impression of a wall in the net this season, tallying 24 saves with a .889 save percentage. While the focus of many fantasy drafts tends to be on offense, it's often the underrated defensive specialist you pick later in the draft who racks up the extra points to help your team.
5. Mackenzie Pike, Junior, Volleyball, Libero
Pike digs. Not holes or trenches, but volleyballs. The junior leads the team with 126 digs, making her one of the top defensive anchors for SF State. If your team is lacking defense, Pike is your answer.
Now that you have an SF State fantasy cheat sheet, draft wisely.
