The eighth Professional Golfers' Association President's Cup will be held across from SF State at Harding Park Golf Course this week, featuring golfing superstars Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and other top American players in a match-up against the world's top international golfers.

San Francisco is only the second U.S. city to host the event, and the first location on the West Coast.

The tournament, scheduled for Oct. 8-11, is also rumored to have appearances from President Barack Obama and former Presidents Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush.

Due to the popularity of the tournament and the high profile public figures attending the event, SF State has reserved select spots in parking lots 20 and 25 for attendees of the event. The school's Department of Parking and Transportation sent an e-mail to students Sept. 30, warning that students will need to show their SF State identification in order to enter the other parking areas around campus.

The department said the mass checking of identification is meant to maintain the rest of the parking spaces around campus for students and faculty.

As in past years, the President's Cup pits top golfers from the United States against a team of international golfers, European players excluded (Europe squares off against the U.S. in a similar event called the Ryder Cup).

Unlike most major PGA tournaments, the President's Cup is scored by match play, in which players from each team play against each other, and the team that wins that particular match gets one point. The team that racks up the most points at the end of the tournament wins the event.

Each team in the President's Cup has a captain who chooses the players for their respective team. This year, the captain for the U.S. is Fred Couples, while the international captain is Greg Norman.

No prize money is collected by the players. Instead, all money collected is given out to charities of the players' choice. According to the PGA's official Web site, the first six President's Cups raised over $13 million for charities worldwide.

The tournament's host, Harding Park Golf Course, originally opened in 1925 and was named after former President Warren G. Harding. The last major championship held at the golf course was the WGC American Express Championship in 2005, which also featured Woods and Mickelson. It was the first PGA event held at Harding Park since 1969.
