After going a tough 1-1-2 during a four-game road trip, SF States men's soccer team returned home on only to suffer a pair of back-to-back losses.
The Gators first dropped a heartbreaking 3-2 overtime loss on Oct. 9 to the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos in a game SF State was initially winning. The disappointment continued two days later when the Gators were shutout 1-0 by Cal State San Bernardino.
The Gators jumped out to an early 1-0 lead over the Broncos when Arnol Arceta scored on a free kick in the fourth minute of play. Seventeen minutes later, the sophomore Arceta notched his second goal of the game and sixth of the season scoring off a free kick giving the gators a 2-0 advantage.
The Gators clung to the 2-0 lead until the 71st minute of play when Rigo Cardenas scored off on assist from Russel Vernon. Eight minutes later the Broncos tied the game when forward Tyler Reinhart slipped by the defense and scored past goalkeeper Mike McNeil.
"We came out to lackadaisical in the second half," said Arceta. "We couldn't close."
Knotted at two goals apiece, the game headed into overtime. In the 98th minute, Marc Glogowsky passed to teammate Reinhart on a breakaway for the game-winning goal.
"Cal Poly Pomona is a technically sound team and played well this afternoon," said Head Coach Joe Hunter.
Two days later against the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes, the Gators were outshot in the scoreless first half 7-3.
The Coyotes stormed out and scored just 38 seconds into the second half when Danny Rodriguez's shot slipped past SF State goalkeeper Eric Scolman to give CSUSB a 1-0 lead.
"A match up of two even teams, we came out soft in the second half, and gave up a soft goal," said Wes Whitt, senior.
The Gators had chances to tie in the 85th minute but CSUSB goalkeeper Arath De La Rocha stopped shot attempts by both Spencer Schwandt and Whitt.
"They are a good team, it took us getting scored on to get it going," Schwandt said. "We're not going to get away with that in this league, we have to stay positive."
The two losses now place the Gators at 5-6-3, and 2-5-3 in CCAA play. The Gators return to the field on Friday Oct. 16 to play Humboldt State, a rematch from Sept. 27 in which the Gators won 3-0.
