The SF State Women's Soccer team found redemption at home this weekend, producing a pair of wins over two teams who upset the Gators on the road. Now second in the CCAA North, the Gators are taking it one game at a time in hopes that they can reach the top of the table for a second consecutive season.

The visiting Humboldt State Lumberjacks matched up well against the Gators, but an overtime golden goal from junior Myriah Johnson sent the home team's sideline into a frenzy as players rushed the field to celebrate Friday's win. On Sunday the Gators doubled their spoils, winning 2-1 over Sonoma State and managing to do so in regulation time. Both teams upset the Gators earlier this season with last minute goals in the second period of overtime.

"The spirit must keep going," said head coach Jack Hyde following Friday's win. "There's often a tendency to settle down after a match like this but we must keep this spirit alive."

And that they did, avenging the match weeks ago that saw the Gators give up a two-goal lead before a Sonoma State golden goal robbed the Gators of any league points. Friday's win over the Lumberjacks was similarly sweet as the Gators found themselves on the winning side of an overtime match for the first time this season.

"Now that we've got this game out of the way, we can look forward and prepare for our next match," said Johnson, one of the team captains.

Sophomore Tamerra Griffin says the team has been working diligently on their defense over the last month and that it's obviously starting to pay off. "We're a lot more comfortable with our positions now," she said. "Everything is a lot more second nature-- we don't ave to think about it as much."

Nicole Vanni had a big weekend with two assists and the game winning goal against Sonoma. Her first assist came on Friday when she helped create Johnson's overtime goal. Kara Cunningham benefited from Vanni's second assist on Sunday netting a crucial goal that was equalized shortly after.

The Gators are now in second place in their division and just three points behind first place Chico State Wildcats. This weekend, the Gators will face off in two games against CSU Monterey Bay. The first match is away on Friday at 12:30 p.m. and the second, on Sunday, will be at home at 2:30 p.m. The Gators have just four games left in the regular season.

The Gators now own a record of 7-6-3 overall, 5-5-2 in their conference, and 4-0-1 in their last five games.
