A combination of students, vendors and faculty from various college departments will present their technological works and research on campus to show students the importance of technology in the education field. Taking place on Tuesday, September 23rd, the Division of Information Technology of San Francisco State University will sponsor the Information Technology Day festival from 10am to 3pm in front of the Cesar Chavez Student Center. Executive Director of the Division of Information Technology Phoebe Kwan said that Jonathan Rood, Associate Vice President for the Division of Information Technology, wanted to promote technology for everyone by holding this all day event. "We will be displaying different uses of technology particularly what is applicable to the higher education environment," said Kwan. Vendors such as Sun Microsystems, IBM, CISCO, Dell, Apple, and Microsoft will all be showing off their latest technological products. There will also be a variety of campus-based projects on display at the festival. "We will be setting up a lie detector unit as we did for last year's IT day," said Andrew Roderick, Information Technology Director for the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences. "It uses monitoring devices which are placed on the subject's skin and monitors heart rate and sweat. It's a lot of fun and this is where IT Day meets Reality TV," Roderick said. The Cinema Department will be showing their student created Web site of streaming movies called Disruption which was inspired by the timing of Spring Break with the war in Iraq. "We decided to create our own responses to these two vastly different types of disruptions and create a site that would be disruption and could also cause disruption," said Jan Millsapps, Director of Creative Arts Computing and Professor of Cinema at SF State. In addition to the various booths, speakers from different departments will also talk about different aspects of technology. One such speech will be given by Diplomat-in-Residence and International Relations professor David Fischer who will speak about the role of technology in terrorism and war. The Division of Information Technology will be providing food and drinks at the event as well as hosting a raffle. Items such as a PDA, computer speakers, printers, and software will be up for grabs. "We came up with an event on the quad that would draw everyone because of its lively, festive atmosphere," said Kwan. For more information, visit www.sfsu.edu/itday/.
