The Art of Fire
Two groups of artists fight to save bonfires on the beach

The National Park Services has been trying to ban bonfires on Ocean Beach since 2002. It has been a struggle to keep the fires under control and the beach clean.

The Park Service, in partnership with Burners Without Borders, the Ocean Beach Foundation and the Surfrider Foundation of San Francisco came up with a creative idea in hopes of extinguishing the controversy.

New public-use fire pits have been installed at the popular bonfire spot, between Lincoln and Fulton. San Francisco has broken ground with the fire pits, which are considered to artistic, as well as, functional.

[X]press explores what it takes to create these pits and those who strive to make even more.
