David Calkins, robotics instructor at San Francisco State University, runs the robotics lab where he and his students have created a robot soccer team. Calkins started the soccer team to get students more involved in robotics and experience how to build humanoid robots -- robots that have arms and legs and resembles a human. The team consists of 10 robots, which the students can program to perform kick the ball and block other players. The robots are maneuvered by remote controls and are also programmed to sense colors, get up if the fall down and know when avoid other robots is too close. The San Francisco State robot soccer team will compete in a robot soccer team tournament, the RoboGames, in June next year. The San Francisco State team has won the gold medal in that competition in previous years. Anyone can join the soccer team and the science department is looking for students with all types of knowledge to help the soccer team. Click the link on the right to view the multimedia…
