The top shelf of a grocery stores’ liquor aisle is often lined with expensive bottles of cognac, vodka, champagne and fine wine. If the all-female band Top Shelf were an actual type of alcohol, they would be up there next to the $300 bottles of Cristal and the prestigious Dom Perignon.

Although you won’t find too many bars where employees dance on the bar in four-inch stilettos and pour water on themselves, more women are taking advantage of the perks females have in the bartending industry.

Nowadays, knitting isn’t only for grandmothers, and Martha Stewart isn’t the only one who can make a shoe rack out of hangers and popsicle sticks. It’s not uncommon to see a student crocheting a beanie in between classes, or a group of friends spending their Friday night scrapbooking.

SF State’s motorcycle community is apparent by the many students walking around campus with books in one hand and a helmet in the other, and the dozens of motorcycles lined up on 19th and Holloway.

Vegas Trade Shows Inspires SF State Fashion Students
Las Vegas kicked off their annual Men’s Apparel Guild In California (MAGIC) show on Feb. 14, but there were no rabbits being pulled out of hats or white doves in sight. Hundreds of the nation’s most elite fashion labels exhibited their fall line. However, some SF State fashion students found magic elsewhere at the smaller, neighboring Pool Trade Show.

Ferdinand Hernandez Makes
His Mark in a Women’s World
In the center of a crowded Border’s Bookstore, amidst college students dressed down in blue jeans and SF State sweatshirts, Ferdinand Hernandez sits in a clean, crisp, black pin-stripe suit. He’s doing what he does best - standing out.
Since he was in junior high school, the 22-year-old apparel design and merchandising senior has always embraced being different. He hopes to use this characteristic as a tool to separate him from other designers in a future career in the fashion industry.

Show Raises Money to Save Studio
Since 2000, Bindlestiff and a community based nonprofit organization called Tenants and Owners Development Corporation have been struggling with the city’s Redevelopment Commission over the building on 185 6th St. The development corporation has proposed 115 units of affordable housing above the original Bindlestiff Studio location, as well as a new theater for Bindlestiff if they raise enough money to secure the spot.

Student Athletic Advisory Committee More Than a Sports Club
A goal of the SF State Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) is to unite all the sports teams for social purposes and to promote the department in a positive way. Although SAAC can get money from the Associate Students Inc., budget cuts left SAAC raising most of the money themselves.
