Decoding the da Vinci theory
Mechanical engineering students Don Best and Steven Gong looked far into the past to create a weapon of slight destruction. The seniors recreated a steam powered cannon originally designed by the Greek mathematician Archimedes in 200 B.C. The two were approached by their instructor to work on the project, and since February have been working on the cannon which is now in its third design phase.

Social Class Could Affect Well-being
An old saying in the black community is “When white folks catch a cold, black folks get pneumonia.” Statistics show that when blacks and whites get the same illnesses such as HIV or cancer, blacks are more likely to die, and SF State’s Public Research Institute has recently received a five year, $5 million grant from the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities to support related research.

Student Evacuees Adjusting to Bay Area
Many California state universities opened their campuses to hurricane evacuees, offering in-state tuition and free housing for the first semester. Students like Ronnie Higgins and Christopher Gibson, who were both students at the University of New Orleans, were able to continue their education on these campuses.

Dyslexia Defined by Visiting Author
Anne Farris, the author of the book, "The Other Side of Dyslexia," gave a lecture on Feb. 14 at 12:00 p.m. at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) , a division of SF State's College of Extended Learning, where she discussed her own struggles with dyslexia and her holistic approach to treating adult dyslexia.
