Democracy - the word As Americans, we follow a liberal democracy, meaning we elect representatives to exercise the power to make decisions and laws. Under majority rule and popular sovereignty we exercise the right to choose our leaders and those who hold office. However, the United States was never established as a “pure” democracy, which would mean that citizens would have a more direct say in how it’s run. This is why, for example, in the 2000 presidential election, George Bush was named the winner despite there being more individual ballots cast for Al Gore. Many say that the closest form of a “pure” democracy happened in Athens, Greece, where the word originated.

Food Knows No Race As a repercussion of this reality, some would argue that there is an unconscious racism factor involved—when a specific group is disadvantaged due to their race. There are stereotypes that people use as assumptions, whether they brand some African-Americans as the “Lil’ John” type or place Spanish-speakers with the comparable ethnicity of being Mexican. These stereotypes are examples of adopted beliefs that stir up an unconscious racism in the current generation. Once these racial biases become fixed in a person’s mentality, it tends to become a part of their unconscious—an unconscious they can eventually act upon. In the long run, this bias can have a negative affect on minorities and their daily lives, including the workplace. These unconscious biases directly affect the power structure within the workplace, a community where equal opportunity is ideally indisputable.
