Student-Run Gospel Choir Flourishes
SF State’s gospel choir started out with only seven members, no sheet music, no band, and no real place to rehearse. They would sing a cappella in different classrooms and sometimes hallways. Now, two years later, the gospel choir is a student-run group that is offered as a one-unit music course (jazz combo 338).

'Castro is Classy'
The second annual event on March 5 entitled, Castro Loves Oscar, was produced by the Theatre in association with ABC7. There were guest appearances by the likes of Willy Wonka, an Oompa Loompa and a barn full of tassel wearing cowboys. For $20, guests watched the 78th Annual Academy Awards show while feasting on hors d’oeuvres and champagne. Some of the proceeds went to ABC's initiative, End Hunger Now.

Three SF State alumni have been nominated for Academy Awards. Ethan Van Der Ryn (B.A., ’85) was nominated for Achievement in Sound Editing for "King Kong." Christopher Boyes (B.A., ’85) was nominated for Achievement in Sound Mixing for “King Kong.” Steven Okazaki (B.A., ’76), an independent filmmaker, produced "The Mushroom Club," a film that was nominated for Best Documentary Short Subject.

Protesters March for Migrant Rights
One hundred supporters stood at the plaza on 24th and Mission streets. The rally was organized by the Bay Area Coalition to Fight the Minute Men as a part of the Caravan for Migrants, a cross country caravan to Washington D.C. to protest the new bill, HR 4437, which calls for the harsher punishment of illegal immigrants.
