The Little Blue Uniform That Could
Policophobia is sometimes referred to as astynomiaphobia, a sixty seven year old word derived from the Greek word meaning police fear, coined in the early 1940s by Dr. Eryx Petalas, a Greek psychologist. His conclusion was that there are people who irrationally or rationally fear police officers, but his colleagues rejected this idea. The term policophobia is not really a scientific term, but it is the more common term used now by doctors, and research is still being done by psychiatrists/psychologists to further evaluate this phobia.

The Price of Democracy
The sound of the helicopters hovering over them is distinct and alarming. One man yells out, “It’s raining!” and Abbot responds, “No, it’s not raining, it’s something else!” The moist droplets felt like water on his skin, but the night sky hid their color. Momentarily, all of the men shared the same excruciating sting on their bodies, targeting their underarms and groin areas.

Mystic Journeys
As I get older, I have begun to notice that my generation is inactive in the Iu Mien community, and I realize that our culture is at risk of becoming extinct. As traditions have gradually diminished, I witness my family’s separation, as with many other Iu Mien families in America, from our religious background. My father is the only one in my family who still practices the ancient Iu Mien religion.
